This diverse group of organizations argues that media ownership regulation is not simply about creating a competitive, profitable marketplace, but is designed to insure a vibrant marketplace for democracy, civic discourse, and diverse viewpoints. The groups urge the FCC to recognize that ownership rules are in place to serve the public interest, and should not be modified or eliminated unless there is convincing evidence that they not longer serve this purpose. The commenters demonstrate that the rule do in fact serve the public interests by showing how important the traditional sources of local media are in the lives of everyday Americans. The groups also focus on the issue of minority and female ownership, making the case that the FCC is obligated under the law to enact policies that foster broadcast ownership by these underrepresented segments of the population. Finally, the groups discuss the often-overlooked effects of media concentration on the civil rights community, the creativity and independence of content providers, and employment opportunities in the media sector.
